Roger Federer failed to hold serve four times but beat Nicolas Kiefer of Germany 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the second round of the $2.45m Cincinnati Masters. Third-seeded Lleyton Hewitt of Australia also needed three sets to win his match, beating Greg Rusedski of Britain 1-6, 7-5, 6-4 when Rusedski double-faulted on match point. In other matches, fourth-seeded Marat Safin of Russia beat Andy Murray of Great Britain 6-4, 1-6, 6-1; Luis Horna of Peru upset No 9 Guillermo Coria of Argentina 6-4, 6-4, and Mario Ancic of Croatia took No 16 seed Richard Gasquet of France 6-4, 7-6. Federer, playing in his first tournament since winning at Wimbledon in early July, needed a tiebreaker and a 7-5 set to beat wild card James Blake on Monday.

TORONTO: Justin Henin-Hardenne of Belgium made short work of Argentine Mariana Diaz-Oliva with a 6-1, 6-3 win at the Rogers Cup. Henin, the fourth-seeded player in the $1.3m tournament and the winner two years ago, played with a wrapped right hamstring. But it didn’t appear to hinder her against Diaz-Oliva. In other matches, sixth-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia ousted Sesil Karatantcheva of Bulgaria 4-6, 6-1, 6-4; No 7 Kim Clijsters of Belgium toppled Virginie Razzano of France, 6-3, 6-0; No 9 Anastasia Myskina of Russia beat American Laura Granville 6-3, 5-7, 6-2; No 12 Ana Ivanovic of Serbia outlasted Marion Bartoli of France, 4-6, 7-6, 7-6, and Spain’s Conchita Martinez defeated No 15 Dinara Safina of Russia 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the third round.
