Federer wins Swiss Indoors

Basel, October 29:

Roger Federer beat Fernando Gonzalez 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (3) on Sunday to win his fourth straight title and 11th of the year at the Swiss Indoors.

The top-ranked Federer hit a forehand return for a winner on the first point of the third-set tiebreaker and cruised from there to win his hometown tournament for the first time in seven attempts. Federer overpowered the defending champion breaking Gonzalez’s serve three times. The final was a rematch of last week’s Madrid Masters final, also won by Federer in three sets.

Lyon GP

LYON: Richard Gasquet won his third title of the season on Sunday, beating Marc Gicquel 6-3, 6-1 at the Lyon Grand Prix.

Gasquet broke Gicquel at the start of the second set and led 4-0. Gicquel then pulled a game back, but was unable to combat Gasquet’s backhand. Gasquet dropped only two sets at the tournament, while Gicquel was appearing in his first final. Since losing to Roger Federer in the fourth round of the US Open, Gicquel reached at least the semi-finals in two of his last three tournaments.

Petersburg Open

ST PETERSBURG: Third-seeded Mario Ancic beat defending champion Thomas Johansson 7-5, 7-6 (2) to win the St Petersburg Open on Sunday.

Ancic converted his only break point in the first set to take the lead. In the second set, Johansson broke Ancic to lead 5-2, but the Croat soon broke back to level at 5-5. Ancic lead 3-0 and then 6-2 in the tiebreaker. Johansson returned long on a match point.
