Chittagong, April 18:
Jason Gillespie hammered his maiden Test century to boost Australia’s domination in the second and final Test before rain brought an early end to third day’s play. Tropical rain washed out the entire final session after Australia reached 364/3 at tea break taking a 167-run first innings lead.
The downpour forced the umpires to call off the play. It was the second weather-related disruption of the match after rain washed out much of the second day’s play.
Gillespie was batting on 102 not out. Gillespie smashed 17 fours in the 300-ball knock. Gillespie, who came as a nightwatchman on the opening day, put on 154 in the unbeaten fourth wicket stand with Michael Hussey, who was batting on 93. Hussey struck 14 boundaries from 120 balls. He earlier shared a 90-run third wicket partnership with captain Ricky Ponting who was run out on 52.
In the first two sessions Australia added 213 runs for loss of only one wicket after resuming on 151 for two. Earlier, a brilliant direct hit from Abdur Razzak ended Ponting’s innings soon after he hammered his 34th Test half century off 94 balls, including four boundaries and one six. Ponting, at the non-strikers end, took off after Gillespie pushed a Mohammad Rafique delivery to backward point, but failed to return to his crease after being sent back. That ended Ponting’s 90-run third wicket stand with Gillespie. Gillespie stood firm and went on to hit his first-ever Test century.
On day two, play was possible only for 22.4 overs before seasonal rain forced an early lunch with Australia racing to 151 for two in reply to Bangladesh’s disappointing first innings total of 197.
A soggy outfield and poor light forced the umpires to call off the rest of the day’s play.
Jason Gillespie resumed the third day on 28 with Ponting on 19. Openers Matthew Hayden (29) and Phil Jaques (66) both were dismissed by Rafique, the only bowler to strike for Bangladesh so far.
