Gourcuff scores early for Rennes in 1-0 win over Toulouse
RENNES: It did not take long for Yoann Gourcuff to score a well-constructed goal on Friday and lead Rennes to fourth place in the French league standings.
Just 42 seconds into the game against Toulouse and after a succession of precise passes between the Rennes players, Gourcuff was perfectly set up through the defence by Paul-George Ntep. The former France international redirected the ball with a clever and quick first touch and slotted home with the outside of his foot, firing a shot between the legs of keeper Alban Lafont.
Rennes extended its unbeaten streak at home to eight league matches and moved within eight points of leader Nice, which hosts Bastia on Sunday.
Toulouse played better in the second half and had two good chances through Christopher Jullien and captain Martin Braithwaite but Rennes keeper Benoit Costil thwarted their attempts at goal. The southern side is now winless in five matches and sits five points behind Rennes.
Tempers frayed towards the end and Toulouse was reduced to ten men in added time after Jullien was sent off for kicking out at Rennes substitute Pedro Henrique.
