Memphis, February 20:

Andy Roddick tested his sprained left ankle, then withdrew from his semi-final on Saturday in the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. Roddick was supposed to face Kenneth Carlsen, who advanced to his first ATP Tour final since 2002. Now Carlsen will face eighth-seeded Max Mirnyi, a 7-5, 6-3 winner over second-seeded Tommy Haas.

Roddick knew that he had a great chance to win a second title in two weeks, with just Carlsen and Mirnyi left in the field. But the 2003 US Open champion decided about two hours before his match that he couldn’t risk further injury with the US facing Croatia on March 4-6. In the women’s Cellular South Cup, top-seeded Vera Zvonareva defended her title with a 7-6, 6-2 victory over third-seeded Meghann Shaughnessy.

ABN Amro:

ROTTERDAM: Top-seeded Roger Federer of Switzerland beat Mario Ancic of Croatia 7-5, 6-3 and will face Ivan Ljubicic in the final of the $992,300 ABN Amro.

Federer is playing in his third tournament this year, and this will be the second time he will face Ljubicic in a final. Earlier, Ljubicic used 12 aces to top Thomas Johansson of Sweden 7-6, 7-5. It will be Ljubicic’s third final this year.

Diamond Games:

ANTWERP: Venus Williams will face top-seeded Amelie Mauresmo of France in the final of the Diamond Games with a chance to win the $1.3 million gem-encrusted trophy after beating Anastasia Myskina of Russia 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

Mauresmo, the world No 2, beat Alicia Molik of Australia 6-3, 7-6 in the other semi-final. In a seesaw battle, Williams prevailed late in the deciding set when she scored several key points at the net.

Brazil Open:

SALVADOR: Sixth-seeded Rafael Nadal defeated Alberto Martin 6-0, 6-7, 6-1 to win the $380,000 ATP Brazil Open in an all-Spanish final. Nadal, ranked 48th in the world, outplayed the unseeded Martin during most of the match, winning his second ATP title.

The left-handed teenager got off to an impressive start, overpowering Martin and winning the first 10 games.
