Indian cricketer shot dead
MEERUT: Indian cricketer Gagandeep Singh was among the two persons shot dead by an assailant in the city, police said today.
The incident occurred around midnight on Friday when Singh along with his friend was standing outside a shop selling ‘kebabs’ in Meerut. Police said a man got out of the car and demanded that he be served kebabs. When the shopkeeper Shahnawaz asked him to wait, he started abusing him.
Another man whose face was covered then came out of the same car and started firing in which 18-year-old Singh and the shopkeeper were killed, police said.
Residents of the area rushed the seriously injured Gagandeep and Shahnawaz to a hospital where they were declared brought dead. Another man identified as Sharif was injured in the incident.
The gunman has been arrested, police said. Police suspect some old enmity was the reason behind the attack. Seven empty shells were recovered from the spot, SP City, Prabal Pratap Singh said.
Singh was in Meerut to play in a local cricket tournament. The left-arm spinner toured Australia six months ago for an under-19 tournament.
