Injured Lampard out for MLS Stars versus Tottenham Hotspur

NEW YORK: Former England international Frank Lampard will not play in next week's Major League Soccer All-Star Game against Tottenham Hotspur because of a nagging calf strain, the league announced Saturday.

Lampard has yet to make his debut for New York City because of the lingering injury suffered in training just over a week ago.

The 37-year-old midfielder, who spent 13 trophy-laden years at Chelsea which included a Champions League victory in 2012 and the Europa League a year later, was made a special commissioner's selection to the MLS all-star squad along with former England team-mate Steven Gerrard of the Los Angeles Galaxy. Lampard was also chosen for the matchday roster.

Lampard, who scored seven goals in 33 English Premier League matches against Tottenham, has twice played in the MLS All-Star Game when Chelsea faced the elite US league squad. The MLS team won 1-0 in 2006 and beat Chelsea 3-2 in 2012, when Lampard scored one goal and set up the other.

Garber named New York Red Bulls captain Dax McCarty as a replacement for Lampard against the Spurs, giving the decade-long MLS veteran his first All-Star nod.
