Kwiks Basketball
KATHMANDU: Gyan Niketan and Valley Public claimed the boys’ and girls’ championship respectively in the first Kwiks Greenland Basketball Tournament. Gyan Nikentan defeated Mount Glory 46-30 and Valley Public beat Trungram International Academy 31-12. Anil KC of Mount Glory won the most valuable player award in the boys’ section while Soni Tamang was adjudged the most valuable player in the girls’ section. Likewise, Himalayan International Ideal and Liceum won the fair play award in boys’ and girls’ section respectively. — HNS
Athletes set records
KATHMANDU: Prem Mahat and Kanchi Maya Koiju have set new 1000m national records in the National Open Under-distance Athletics Competition here at Dasharath Stadium on Sunday. Mahat broke Som Bahadur Rana Magar’s 2:35.1 record finishing the race in 2:35 while Koiju bettered Raj Kumari Pandey’s record of 3:09.6m with the timings of 3:04. Winners in other events included Devi Basnet (men’s 60 and 150 m), Chandrakala Thapa (women’s 60 and 300m), Pratap Chand (300m), Rajendra Bhandari (3000m), Nirmala Bharati (3000m), Ujir Singh Bista (shot put), Tika Chaudhary (men’s long jump), Dhirendra Jung Shah (javalin throw) and Santosh Shrestha (high jump). — HNS
Venus win SEB Cup
KATHMANDU: Venus beat Deep Jyoti 21-25, 25-18, 25-20, 25-22 in the final of the first SEB Inter-school Boys’ Volley Tournament organised by Samakhusi English Boarding School. Birendra Gauchan of Venus was declared the man of the match. In the third-place match, SEB ‘A’ beat Gyankunja (Jawalakhel) 17-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-23 and 15-11. Principal of Saraswati Campus, Narayan Gurung gave away the prizes. — HNS
Khatri wins title
KATHMANDU: Renuka Khatri of Bijeswori School beat Saru Kawa of Vidya Arjan to win the U-12 girls’ title of the fifth Purnaman Bajracharya Memorial Open Table Tennis Tournament on Sunday. Khatri and Kawa had earlier entered the final beating Sunita Lama and Sanisha Shrestha in the semi-finalsrespectively. The second round of the U-12 boys’ event concluded today. The third Media Cup along with other remaining events will be held on Monday. — HNS
