Greenland defeated Gauri Shankar School 3-1, AVM beat Shrine Academy by the same margin, Siddhi Ganesh outplayed Mary land 5-1, LRI overwhelmed Arunodaya School 4-0, and Dipendra Police School thrashed Bhaktapur English School 6-0. — HNS

KATHMANDU: RIBS, Gyan Niketan, Ideal Model, Sambotta, Shuvatara, Young Hearts and LRI entered the senior boys’ section quarter-finals of the Monsoon Meet 2005 Inter-school Basketball Tournament. In the day’s matches, RIBS thrashed South Point 80-12; Ideal Model beat Ideal English 54-36; Shuvatara outplayed Tripura 25-2; Young Hearts edged past Daffodil 47-41. In junior boys’ section, RIBS, Daffodil, Holy Garden, HIMS, hosts Shridiwa,, Sambotta, Wilson and Gyan Niketan made it to the last eight. In the day’s matches, RIBS beat South Point 54-17; Daffodil beat LRI 46-28; HIMS overwhelmed Alpha’s 34-7; Shridiwa defeated Young Hearts 29-12; and Gyan Niketan beat Shuvatara 39-11. — HNS

Karate players feted

KATHMANDU: Kishor Bahadur Singh, member secretary of National Sports Council, honoured the Goju-kai karate players who won 11 gold, four silver and a bronze medals at the Asian Invitational Karate Championship held at Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, India, from August 15-17. Mahesh Thapa Magar (25kg and kata), Rabindra Gurung (25kg and kata) and Sandesh Tamang (65kg and open section) won two gold medals each, while Bimal Prasad Yadav (45kg), Raju Acharya (55kg), Achyut Raj Upreti (60kg), Sarina Timilsina (30kg), and Manila Thapa Magar (25kg) bagged a gold apiece. Achyut Raj Upreti (open), Subarna Timilsina (20kg), Ajul Tamang (40kg) and Bajul Tamang (40kg) won a silver medal each, and Jaya Prakash Rai bagged a bronze medal in the 65kg section. — HNS

Kits handed over

KATHMANDU: Kishor Bahadur Singh, member secretary of National Sports Council, today handed over sports kits to the president of Chandrodaya Shelter Bijay Rajan Man Shrestha, at a function organised to mark the 78th birthday of Queen Mother Ratna and 41st Children’s Day. The children living at the Shelter presented various cultural programmes on the occasion. At the same function, Mahendra Memorial Trust distributed sweets and fruits to the children of various organisations. — HNS
