Team departs

KATHMANDU: National basketball squad today left for for the upcoming Middle Asia Zone Qualifying Tournament to be held in New Delhi from July 6-10. The team will undergo 17-day training at Patiala before leaving for New Delhi to participate in the qualifying tournament for the 23rd FIBA Asia Basketball Tournament, slated for Doha, Qatar in September. Birthday Cup

KATHMANDU: New Road Team (NRT) defeated Brigade Boys Club 8-7 on penalties in the day’s match of the Birthday Cup football tournament here at Dasharath Stadium. The match went to tie breaker after both the teams failed to break the normal-time 1-1 deadlock even in extra time. Jeevan Sinkeman put NRT ahead while BBC’s Nigerian striker Bemiro Junior levelled the scores on a penalty. In the tie-breaker, Jeevan Sinkeman, Yugal Kishor Rai, goalkeeper Sundar Shrestha, Deepak Tamang, Sanjeev Budhathoki, Naresh Shrestha and Subash Lama scored. For BBC, Milan Rai, Akash Chha-ntyal, Bemiro Jr, Kendra Limbu, Kumar Sunuwar and Resham Thapa converted the spot kicks.

Baba enter final

KATHMANDU: Baba and RIBS entered the junior boys’ section final of the fourth Baba Inter-School Basketball Tournament. In the semi-finals, Baba defeated Gyan Niketan 41-37 riding on Sonam Tashi’s 17 points; and Sunil Lama netted 27 as RIBS ousted Wilson Academy 43-40.

‘C’ Div selection

KATHMANDU: Gyan Bha-irab Club defeated Birgunj Academy 5-4 in tie-breaker in the final of the ‘C’ Division Selection Tournament at Sano Gaucharan. Satdobato Club joined the two clubs in the ‘C’ Division League after the Lalitpur team defeated Naya Bazaar Club 2-1 in the third-place play-off.

Namgyal win

KATHMANDU: Dorjee Gyaltsen scored 12 points as Namgyal School beat LRI 50-38 in the HIMS Inaugural Inter-school Basketball Tournament. In other matches, Intensive downed Gyanodaya 52-42; and RIBS edged past St Xavier’s 36-35. On Thursday, Namgyal defeated Galaxy School 40-17. — HNS
