National chess

KATHMANDU: Sujendra Prasad Shrestha, Bhagawati Prasad Sharma and Balram Napit shared the lead with six points after the sixth and seventh rounds of the 15th National Rating Chess Tournament here on Thursday. Shrestha beat Rajan Chhetry and Ganesh Man Duwal, while Sharma defeated Surbir Lama and reigning Nepal champion Keshav Shrestha. Napit overcame Manish Hamal and former Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali. Rajendra Bajracharya and Shyam Shrestha are joint second with 5.5 points each. — HNS

Inter-school Athletics

KATHMANDU: National Sports Council (NSC), under the auspices of Education and Sports Ministry, is organising the Valleywide Inter-Higher Secondary School Athletics Championship on September 5. The events included in the championship are 5km, 100m and 400m races in men’s section and 3km, 100m and 400m races in the women’s section. — HNS

Dandi-Biyo tomorrow

KATHMANDU: Dandi-Biyo Association of Nepal (DAN) released the rule book of the sport for the first time here on Thursday. Despite being widely accepted as the national sport of Nepal, Dandi-Biyo is not played in organised manner. Kamal Pradhan, Administration Department chief at the National Sports Council, unveiled the book prepared by the seven-member committee formed under the DAN President Bijay Poudel. The association is also organising the demonstration of the sport on the NSC premises on Saturday. — HNS

Gillette basketball

KATHMANDU: Gillette International Boarding Higher Secondary School is organising the fourth Gillette Trophy Junior Boys and Girls’ Basketball Tournament from August 26-31. In all, 40 teams from 27 schools are taking part in the tournament, said Netra Subba, Founder Principal
