McGrath to be saved for Ashes

Sydney, July 11:

Australia’s champion fast bowler Glenn McGrath could miss this year’s ICC Champions Trophy to ensure he is fresh for the Ashes showdown against England, chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch has said.

McGrath dropped out of Australia’s tours to South Africa and Bangladesh earlier this year to help his wife Jane fight a relapse of breast cancer. With her health improving, McGrath, a veteran of 119 Tests, is working on his fitness and keen to represent Australia again.

But Hilditch said it was unclear whether the Australian spearhead would play at the ICC Champions Trophy in India, which ends just weeks before the much anticipated Ashes commence on November 23. “We’re going to sit down with the coaching staff and map out Glenn’s fitness and how he needs to best get back into playing cricket again,” Hilditch said on Monday.

“That (the Indian series) will be something we’ll talk through with Glenn and the Australian coaches and make sure Glenn’s program is exactly as he wants it and we need it to be so he’s ready to play in the Ashes.
