Nagarkoti first woman Member Secretary
KATHMANDU: Sakuntala Nagarkoti became the first woman Member Secretary of the National Sports Council when she took helm at the sports governing body of the country here on Monday.
Nagarkoti, who was nominated as the NSC Member three months ago, was appointed as the Member Secretary by the minister-level decision. The post was vacant following the retirement of Yubaraj Lama, who completed his four-year tenure at the NSC on Wednesday.
This is the first time in 66-year history of the NSC that an woman took charge of the Member Secretary post. As per the appointment letter, Nagarkoti has been appointed the Member Secretary until further decision nut the MoYS has given all powers to her including financial decisions.
The cabinet had nominated Nagarkoti, Lama Tendi Sherpa and Surendra Bahadur Hamal as the NSC Members following a proposal from Minister Purushottam Paudel after the CPN-UML took helm of the MoYS. Sherpa was later appointed as the vice-president. The former kabaddi and volleyball player, Nagarkoti was Vice-president at Dadeldhura District Sports Development Committee. Currently, she is also the President of Dadeldhura District Volleyball Association and Member of Nepal Sports Federation under CPN-UML.
Vice-president Sherpa and officials of the sports governing body welcomed Nagarkoti. “The sports fraternity has fallen on my shoulders and my first priority will be to work for President Running Shield,” said Nagarkoti. “I will try my best to work towards the betterment of the athletes. I am proud that a woman has become a Member Secretary in the history of Nepali sports,” said Nagarkoti.
