APF defend title
LALITPUR: Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) School defended the 14th Fr Moran Memorial Invitational Inter-school Football Tournament here on Saturday. They registered a comprehensive 4-0 win over Little Angels in the final. Sushant Karki scored a brace and Pradeep GC and Dinesh Shahi added one goal each. Sameer Silwal scored the winner as Dolphin beat Regina Amoris 1-0 in the third-place playoff. Sushant was declared the best player of the tournament while Srimad Silwal of Dolphin, Shakti Dura of LA, Sudan Bhandari of APF were adjudged the best defender, goalkeeper and coach respectively. Prajwol Bista of APF was honoured with the promising player award while Kathmandu University School bagged the Fair Play award.
Khwapring win
BHAKTAPUR: Hosts Khwapring School on Saturday claimed the junior and senior boys' titles of the first Khwapring Cup Inter-school Chess Tournament. Raj Prajapti defeated Sujan Tamang of Ever Young and Nawal Ghimire of Tara Punja School to claim the junior boys' championship with seven points. In the senior boys, Krishna Prajapati outplayed Himal Lama of Mahankal in the sixth and shared a point with Anil Silpakar of Genuine School in the final round to finish first with 6.5 points. Lama finishing second with six points. Asmita Dhaubadel of Genuine claimed the open girls' title earning five points with a win over Mira Kakshyapati of the organising school in the final round. Matina Kushi of Kwapring also collected five points with a win over Srijana Bista of Ewai but had to settle for the second place on a weaker progressive rate. Suroj Lohani of Green Land finished second with six points in the junior boys. A total of 115 players from 33 schools and five districts participated in the tournament.
FM Hamal holds IM
KATHMANDU: FIDE Master (FM) Manish Hamal won a match and held an International Master (IM) at the first Lake City International FIDE Rating Chess Tournament in Rajasthan on Saturday. The 2086-rated Hamal defeated Arthab Bairage in the third round and drew with 2299-rated IM Ankit R Rajpatta, both from India, to earn 3.5 points. Niraj Niraula's winning streak ended after he lost to Vikramaditya Shah in the fourth round. Earlier, Niraula --- with three points -- defeated Balchandra Dhuliya in the third round. Purushottam Chaulagain lost to Pawan Jadeja in the fourth round after drawing with Yaspal Arora in the third. Chaulagain has 2.5 points while Milan Rokka, Jeevan Mainali, Bikram Priye and Harish Chandra Chaulagain have two points apiece.
Golden Gate triumph
LALITPUR: Golden Gate College on Saturday registered double wins at the Professional Gyan Carnival Inter-college Basketball Tournament. Their 'A' team crushed National Campus 60-26 after Bikram Dangol posted 22 points alone while 21 points from Navaraj Dahal helped the the 'B' team defeat Gyanodaya 49-32. In other matches, Reliance College defeated Galaxy 42-22 and Einstein College overcame National Integrated College 42-23. In the girls' section Gyanodaya defeated Ace Institute of Management 34-29.
Gyanu Baba on top
KATHMANDU: Defending champions Gyanu Baba lead the fourth Dhorpatan Blue Sky Cup Women's Double League Volleyball after winning both their matches on Saturday. They beat Deep Jyoti in straight sets 25-12, 25-5, 25-6 before seeing off New Diamond 25-12, 25-16, 25-14 to top the league with a maximum eight points from four games, one point ahead of Angel Heart. Also winning on Saturday were Nepal Police Club, Angel Heart and Fishtail. Nepal Police defeated New Diamond 25-13 but lost to Fishtail 25-27, 25-15, 25-15, 26-25. Angel Heart overcame PLA Sports Club 25-17, 25-23, 25-23.
Chaudhary departs
KATHMANDU: The National Sports Council Member Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary left for Dhaka to attend the Chef-de-mission meeting of the 11th South Asian Games to be held on Sunday. The NSC member Samim Miya Ansari, who is also the advisor of the Youth and Sports minister Ganesh Nepali, has been named the acting Member Secretary.
