National women’s chess: Monalisa clinches championship

Kathmandu, February 15:

Monalisa Khambu of Times College accumulated seven points to win the first National Women’s Chess Championship today.

Monalisa, who represented Nepal in the 15th Asian Games, registered two wins on Sunday to extend her lead to 1.5 points with just one round to go. Monalisa defeated Manita Kusi in the sixth round before beating Tara Ghale in the seventh round.

Shanta Thapa and Asmita Adhikari of Deep Jyoti shared points in the sixth round to earn 5.5 points and they cannot catch Monalisa even if they win their last-round match on Monday. In the seventh round, Shanta defeated Manita, while Asmita beat Suman Dura.

Bina Jaiswal and Bisaikha Jaiswal and Samikshya Gautam are joint third with five points apiece. Binita Jaiswal, Tara Ghale and Uttara Gautam are next with 4.5 each.
