Nepal clinch golf championship

Kathmandu, March 8:

Nepal defeated USA 4-0 to win the USA-Nepal Friendship Match Play Golf Tournament here at the Gokarna Golf Club today.

Played under the match-play format, all the home teams prevailed over the visitors. Both the teams had eight players each and four groups of two players apiece from both the sides made a team to play against each other. The visiting team consisted the former USPGA professionals, while the local team was formed with the top pros.

Nepal skipper Deepak Acharya and Rabi Khadka, who were 5-up on the front nine after five straight birdies in a row from third hole, finished off the match on the 14th when the duo went 6-up against Jerry Cockrell and Joe Rowell.

Acharya and Khadka also became the best winning pair as all other three Nepali teams were stretched to the 17th hole.

Pashupati Sharma and Sabin Sapkota were at level against Dan Barton and Brent Marcum by the end of 15 holes, but the duo won next two holes to wrap up the match. Deepak Thapa Magar and Ramesh Nagarkoti beat Phil Powers and Butch Parker with one hole remaining.

The other pair of Shiva Ram Shrestha and Sanjay Lama also faced similar circumstances against Steve Marcum and Bill Powell and emerged victorious only after the 17th hole. The losing team captain Phil Powers gave away the trophy to the winning team skipper Acharya.

The visiting team conducted a golf clinic at the Gokarna Golf Club on Friday before taking part in the Pro-Am tournament on Saturday. Nepal Professional Golfer’s Association and Gokarna Golf Club jointly organised the events. The USA team is on Monday leaving for Pokhara to

participate in similar tournament at the Himalayan Golf Course.

Meanwhile, NPGA informed the All Nepal CMS Caddies Championship is slated for Monday at the Royal Nepal Golf Club. The CMS Open is scheduled for March 16-19 at the RNGC.
