Nepali shuttlers off to Kedah

KATHMANDU: Top four Nepali shuttlers left for Malaysia today to participate in the 11th Under-19 World Badminton Championship slated for October 28 to November 1 in Kedah.

Top ranked Ratnajit Tamang, No 2 Sajan Krishna Tamrakar, No 3 Bibek Shrestha and No 4 Bhugol Gurung will represent Nepal at the world meet. Apart from competing at the singles event, Ratnajit will also team up with Bibek Shrestha and Sajan will be paired with Bhugol Gurung in the doubles event. This is the second time Nepal are participating in the tournament after playing at the 10th edition in Pune last year. Nepal are making their appearance in the tournament following the invitation from the World Badminton Federation.

Ratnajit stunned the Nepali sports after winning the recently held nationwide badminton tournament defeating his senior and experienced opponent Ram Singh Chaudhary. Along with Ratnajit, Sajan, Bibek and Bhugol have already been selected for the 11th South Asian Games to be held in Dhaka from January 29 to February 9 next year.

The players will also join the World Junior Training Campaign (WJTC) in Kedah which will run from

November 3-17. The WJTC organisers Badminton

Asia Confederation will bear all the expenses for the

Campaign. The shuttlers’ participation in the campaign will help boost confidence of the players at the regional meet in Dhaka.

“Despite of the budget constraints we have managed to send the players

at the world meet. But,

their participation at the campaign will help the

players gain confidence in the upcoming SA Games,” said Nepal Badminton Association’s President Prakash Bahadur Shahi.

The players said they

will give their best performance at the championship. The Nepali team is accompanied by coach Udaya

Kumar Shrestha and official duo Sameer Bahadur Singh and Rajesh Gurung. National Sports Council Member

Secretary Hari Babu Chaudhary among others bade farewell to the team.
