Nepali winning streak ends

KATHMANDU: Nepal champion Badri Lal Nepali’s winning streak in the third Jugal Kishore Newatia Memorial International Open Rating Chess tournament ended in Assam today.

In the fifth round match, Nepali lost to 2381-rated Debashish Das of India and was pushed back to third place with four points. Nepali was leading the chart after he registered a sensational win over 2394-rated International Master Atanu Lahiri of India in the third round before recording yet another victory in the fourth round on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Prem Krishna Maharjan, Rabindra Shakya, Raju Subedi won their respective fifth round matches. Maharjan registered a comfortable win in 15 moves over Debanga K Bhattacharya, Shakya overcame Pulak Arun and Subedi thrashed Indu Bhusan Bajpai, all from India. Bikash Koluju, Brij Bihari Shah, Damodar Gaiju, Sanjay Maharjan and Ram SP Shah also won today.

After the completion of the fifth round, Bishwo Bijaya Ghimire, Padam Rupacha, Prem Krishna Maharjan, Rabindra Shakya, Raju Subedi, Bikash Kuluju and Brij Bahadur Shah have three points each.
