Nirmal guides Nepal to stunning victory
Penang, August 6:
The Nepali Under-17 team registered a stunning 10-wicket victory over Brunei, thanks to Nirmal Simangauda, who claimed four wickets, in the ACC U-17 Asia Cup here at Penang Sports Club, today. Nepal’s fate to advance to the quarter-finals will be decided after the last Group C match between Afghan-istan and Brunei on Monday. “Brunei was a weak team and we should not be confident about it,” said skipper Gyanendra Malla. Malla’s decision to bowl first paid off as the Nepali batsmen bowled out Brunei for a paltry 34 runs in 19.3 overs. Right arm medium pacer Nirmal Simangaida claimed the first wicket with the fourth ball of the innings and went on to add other three scalps. Sunam Gautam and Sushant Thapa took two wickets each. In reply, Nepal overcame the target without loss in just four overs. Opener Deepen Shrestha scored an unbeaten 18 including two boundaries while another opener Rajan Khadgi remained unbeaten on 10. The Nepali camp was worried after 10 overs due to sudden rain. Thanks to rain god, the match started after 40 minutes. “We were lucky that the match resumed. Otherwise it would have been very diffucult for us to advance to the quarter,” said coach Roy Dias.
