Oram sparkles as Kiwis fly high in Adelaide

Adelaide, January 23:

Jacob Oram made 86 and took an important wicket as New Zealand beat England by 90 runs to post their first win in four matches in the tri-series tournament. His highest score in one-dayers helped New Zealand to 210 as they batted first.

Daniel Vettori took four wickets, James Franklin three, Shane Bond two and Oram kicked in the wicket of Paul Nixon as New Zealand dismissed England for 120. That win lifted New Zealand into second place with five points, behind Australia (18). England have four points.

Franklin set England on the path to defeat by taking their first three wickets for 17 runs. He dismissed Mal Loye (8), Ian Bell (2) and Andrew Strauss (19). Ed Joyce top-scored with 47 and attempted to revive England in partnerships with Andrew Flintoff and Paul Collingwood before falling to Vettori. Vettori went on to dismiss Collingwood (10), Flintoff (9) and Jamie Dalrymple (0).

England’s last six wickets fell for only 28 runs. Bond ended the England innings by dismissing Monty Panesar (6) and Jon Lewis (5) with successive balls.

Oram had earlier guided New Zealand’s recovery from another top-order collapse. He came to the crease when his team was 61/4 in the 21st over and left more than 26 overs later when it was 191/7.

In the interim, he shared a 120-run sixth-wicket stand with Brendon McCullum (30). New Zealand lost opener Nathan Astle (1), Stephen Fleming (20), Peter Fulton (24), Ross Taylor (15) and Craig McMillan (2), slumping to 71-5.
