Pelle Edberg leads European Open

Straffan, July 6:

Pelle Edberg made two 60-foot birdie putts to shoot a 5-under 65 and take a two-stroke lead in the second round of the European Open.

The 28-year-old Swede made successive birdies three times, dropping only one shot to total 8-under 132. First-round leader Maarten Lafeber, who had not yet started his round, was second. Edberg said the putts at the second and eighth holes were lucky.

US Open champion Angel Cabrera, playing in his first tournament since winning at Oakmont on June 17, hit a 69 to improve by two strokes on his first round.

The Argentine again bogeyed the first hole by hooking his second shot into water at the par-5 10th. He then birdied the 14th and 16th, bogeyed the next two, before collecting two birdies on his second nine. Padraig Harrington (68) also made a bad start with three bogeys in his first eight holes, but recovered with four birdies. He also started at the 10th.
