Pietersen ton helps England to 347-6

Leeds, August 4:

Kevin Pietersen survived three scares to hit his fifth Test century on Friday, then retired hurt after helping England to 347-6 at stumps on the opening day of the third Test against Pakistan.

Pietersen hit three fours to move from 87 past 100 in the third over following tea, after twice being given treatment for cramp in his left forearm by a physiotherapist. After being dropped by Salman Butt at midwicket on 104, Pietersen received more treatment, then retired hurt, with England on 259-4.

Chris Read took to the crease to continue fourth wicket stand. Read (38) equalled his best-ever Test score, and put on 86 runs with Ian Bell (66) to push England to 345-5. Matthew Hoggard faced 12 balls before being bowled by Gul, giving the bowler figures of 4-73, drawing play to close.

After electing to bat under overcast skies, Trescothick (28) was caught and bowled by Sami. Four balls later, Nazir, making his first Test appearance since 1999, dismissed Strauss (36), with England on 67.

Trescothick had earlier been dropped by Younis Khan on four. Strauss fell four balls later, caught by Khan off Nazir.

England lost Cook (23) on the last ball of the first session, at the hands of Gul. Paul Collingwood, who had got off the mark with a six, made 31 before hooking to Taufeeq Umar at midwicket with England on 192 for 4.

England has a 1-0 lead in the four-Test series. It’s bidding to win its first home series against Pakistan in six attempts since 1982, and that also came at Headingley.
