Pooja, Sujana advance to doubles final
KATHMANDU: The Nepal Armed Police (APF) Club duo Sujana Shrestha and Pooja Shrestha made it the women’s doubles final of the sixth Krishna Mohan Memorial Nationwide Open Badminton Championships here today.
Sujana and Pooja combined to beat Tulasi Gurung and Purna Pun 21-3, 21-15 and will play against the pair of Nangsal Devi Tamang and Sakuntala Nembang, who defeated Sara Devi Tamang and Saraswoti Shrestha 21-15, 21-15. In the girls’ u-16 semi-finals, Swastika Budhathoki beat Srinkhala Dahal 21-10, 21-10 and Sikchhya Shrestha overcame Bindu Shrestha 21-8, 21-9.
In the boys’ U-16 quarter-finals, Dipesh Dhami saw off Suman Limbu 21-7, 21-12, Riyazuddin overcame Sachin Gurung 21-13, 21-17, Prabin Basnet beat Sambelan Rai 18-21, 21-12, 21-17 and Irfan Ansari edged past Josef Adhikari 21-11, 17-21, 21-12.
Bikash Shrestha advanced to the men’s singles semi-finals with a 24-26, 21-17, 21-8 win over Bishal Pradhan. Joining him in the last four were Sahadev Khadka, Ram Singh Chaudhary and Indra Mahata. Sahadev saw off Pankaj Chand 21-17, 21-14, Ram Singh overcame Sajan Krishna Tamrakar 21-19, 15-21, 21-18 and Indra edged past Ratnajit Tamang 18-21, 21-16, 25-23. Making it to the men’s doubles semis were Bibek Shrestha/Rajnajit, Ram Rai/Bimal Shrestha, Ram Singh/ Nawaraj Joshi, and Indra Mahata/Bishal Pradhan.
Sujana Shrestha, Pooja Shrestha, Sara Devi Tamang and Nangsal Devi Tamang entered the women’s singles semi-finals. Sujana beat Punam Gurung 21-13, 21-15, Pooja overcame Shamjhana Sharma 21-11, 21-15, Sara Devi dispatched Mary Thapa 21-7, 21-7 and Nangsal Devi, younger sister of Sara, sneaked past Nary Thapa 22-20, 21-19 in the quarter-finals. Winning the mixed doubles last 16 round matches were the duo of Pooja/Rajiv, Kabita/Bimal, Pankaj/Bina, Nangsal Devi/Bibek, Indra/Samjhana, Ram Singh/Nary, Sujana/Bishal and Sara Devi/Ratnajit.
