Rana sets individual medley record
LALITPUR: Sailesh Rana set a new national record in the men’s 200m individual medley at the fifth Pramod Memorial Age-group and Open Swimming Championships here at the Satdobato Swimming Complex on Thursday.
Rana set the national record in 2 minutes, 31.94 seconds and broke Wangdel Lama’s previous mark of 2:37.38 set during the third South Asian Federation (SAF) Games in Kolkata in 1987. Nepal Swimming Association awarded Rana with Rs 10,000 for his achievement.
Rana also won the 100m breaststroke gold medal in 1:14.72 to take his gold tally to seven. He have already claimed the 200m breaststroke, 100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 200m backstroke and 50m breaststroke gold medals over the last two days.
Likewise, Puspa Raj Shahi claimed the 50m backstroke gold in 32.99, ahead of Kisim Lal Tharu and Rana. Prasidhha Jung Shah won the 50m freestyle gold in 27.28 while Sailesh and Milan Thapa were restricted to silver and bronze medal respectively.
Karishma Karki equalled Rana as the most gold medal winner at the met with seven. Karki claimed three more gold in 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly today. She had won four gold medals — 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly, 200m individual medley and 50m backstroke - in the last two days.
Karki won the 100m backstroke in 1:22.20, 100m freestyle in 1:12.97 and 50m butterfly in 35.72. Saila Rana and Shreya Dhital finished second and third respectively in all three events that Karki won. Likewise, Sudha Shrestha claimed the 200m breaststroke gold in 3:43.89. Shila Devi Gurung won silver and Jenisha Malla the bronze.
Meanwhile, Little Angels (LA) School won the team champions in the age-group tournament. Little Angels earned 107 points followed by Baba Boarding School (76) and Kathmandu Valley (30). Winners in the age-group tournament include Shila Devi Gurung (U-12) of Kathmandu Valley in 50m backstroke, Jenisha Malla (U-15) of LA in 50m breaststroke and Surangana Bamjom (U-17) of LA in 50m breaststroke.
Winners in the boys’ section were Shisir Gurung (U-12) of Shuvatara in 50m butterfly, Prabesh Adhikari (U-14) of Baba in 50m breaststroke and 50m breaststroke (U-17) , Milan Thapa (U-17) of LA in 50m freestyle and Baninsensha (U-17) of Baba in 100m breaststroke. Baba also clinched the boys’ 4x50 metre relay gold.
