Lewandowski scores twice as Bayern win again

  • Lewandowski has three goals from two games
  • Dortmund also top with 2-0 win over Hertha
  • Badstuber scores winner for promoted Stuttgart
  • Augsburg snatch draw with late equaliser against Gladbach

BERLIN: Forward Robert Lewandowski struck twice in three second-half minutes to steer champions Bayern Munich to a 2-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Saturday for their second successive win of the new Bundesliga season.

The Poland international, who narrowly missed out on being top scorer last season, snatched his first goal in the 72nd minute with an audacious backheel and added another with a fine solo effort before Werder had time to recover.

The Bavarians, who have now won their last 16 games against Werder in all competitions, are on six points, the same as Hamburg SV, who won 3-1 at Cologne on Friday.

Borussia Dortmund are also on six, ahead on goal difference, after easing past toothless Hertha Berlin by the same score.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened their account in the 15th minute and Nuri Sahin doubled their lead with a ferocious 20-metre missile.

Bayern keeper Manuel Neuer was making his first appearance since breaking a bone in his foot in April but had little to do in the opening 15 minutes as the champions hit the crossbar and created two more chances, with Werder struggling to cope with their pace.

The hosts gradually clawed their way back into the game, but Arjen Robben still sneaked into the box, only to see his glancing header roll wide of the post just before the break.

Werder kept at it and were rewarded in the 72nd when Kingsley Coman shook off his marker and cut the ball back towards goal for Lewandowski.

The 29-year-old ran halfway across the pitch and slotted the ball through the legs of keeper Jiri Pavlenka for his third goal in two games.

"It was an important win in a very difficult game," said Bayern coach Carlo Ancelotti. "We had problems for more than an hour to find the spaces. There are always thing you can improve but today what mattered were the three points."

Former Bayern defender Holger Badstuber scored the winner for his new club, VfB Stuttgart, as the promoted team got their first three points of the season with a 1-0 win over Mainz 05.

It was Badstuber's first goal since 2009 following the former Germany international's long struggle with injuries.

Eintracht Frankfurt will be asking themselves how they lost 1-0 to VfL Wolfsburg after rattling the woodwork repeatedly, wasting a hatful of chances and having more shots on goal in the first half than in any game of the last three seasons.

Venezuelan Sergio Cordova's 89th-minute goal rescued a point for Augsburg with a 2-2 draw against Borussia Moenchengladbach while Bayer Leverkusen and Hoffenheim also shared a draw by the same score.
