Roddick struggles against Ferrer in Paris Masters
Paris, November 5:
Top-seeded Andy Roddick saved two match points before beating David Ferrer of Spain 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 to reach the semi-finals of the Paris Masters. Roddick will face Croatia’s Ivan Ljubicic. The other semi-final is all-Czech affair between Radek Step-anek and Tomas Berdych.
Ljubicic claimed the last berth in the eight-man Masters Cup when Berdych beat seventh-seeded Gaston Gaudio 7-5, 6-0. Top-ranked Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Roddick, Lleyton Hewitt, Andre Agassi and Guillermo Coria have already qualified. Nikolay Davydenko earned the seventh spot with his third-round victory, but lost on Friday to Stepanek 7-5, 6-4. Ljubicic struggled past Tommy Robredo of Spain 7-6, 3-6, 6-1.
Elena Dementieva beat Kveta Peschke 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals of tle Advanta Championships and claim the eighth and final berth in next week’s WTA Tour Championships.
Dementieva joins Lindsay Davenport, Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, Amelie Mauresmo, Mary Pierce, Patty Schnyder and Nadia Petrova at the elite event.
Petrova beat Martina Sucha 7-5, 7-6 and will play Dementieva. Also advancing was Czech Nicole Vaidisova, who beat Lisa Raymond 6-4, 6-1. Mauresmo beat Mash-ona Washington 6-3, 6-4.
