Roger Federer reaches quarter-finals in Rotterdam

Top-seeded Roger Federer outclassed fellow Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka 6-1, 6-4 at the ABN Amro on Thursday, advancing to the quarter-finals with a second consecutive straight-set victory. Also, third-seeded Tim Henman beat Michael Llodra of France 6-4, 6-1. Federer, who advanced to a match against sixth-seeded Nikolay Davydenko of Russia, broke Wawrinka in the fourth and sixth games of the first set and again in the opening game of the second set.
Henman and Llodra held serve until the 10th game, when Henman broke to close out the set. He then won the second set easily.
In other action, Thomas Johansson upset fellow Swede Joachim Johansson 6-4, 6-4; Ivan Ljubicic edged Sjeng Schalken 6-4, 5-7, 6-3; and Mario Ancic of Croatia defeated Olivier Rochus of Belgium 6-4, 6-3.
Diamond Games
ANTWERP:
Top seed Amelie Mauresmo swept past Mary Pierce 6-4, 6-1 in an all-French battle to reach the quarter-finals of the Diamond Games. Second seed Anastasia Myskina of Russia had a much tougher time against another Frenchwoman, Tatiana Golovin, before prevailing 6-3, 6-7, 6-4. Myskina will play Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia in the quarters. In the other match, No 4 Alicia Molik of Australia beat Bulgaria’s Magdalena Maleeva, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6.
Mauresmo, ranked second by the WTA Tour, will face Patty Schnyder of Switzerland in the quarter-finals. Defending champion Kim Clijsters will play two-time Diamond Games champion Venus Williams in another quarter-final. A tournament title in Antwerp for Williams would give her permanent possession of $1.3 million gold-and-diamond trophy.

Second-seeded Tommy Haas of Germany beat Kevin Kim 7-6, 6-3 to advance to the quarter-finals of the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. Haas will face fifth-seeded Xavier Malisse of Belgium, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Canada’s Frank Dancevic. In other matches, France’s Antony Dupuis led third-seeded Vince Spadea 7-5, 2-0 when the American retired because of a shoulder injury; Robby Ginepri defeated sixth-seeded fellow American Mardy Fish 6-1, 7-5; and eighth-seeded Max Mirnyi of Belarus beat France’s Cyril Saulnier 7-5, 6-4.
In the WTA Cellular South Cup, top-seeded Russian Vera Zvonareva beat Katerina Bondarenko of Ukraine 7-5, 6-0 to advance to the semis. The defending champion will face eighth-seeded Evgenia Linetskaya of Russia, a 6-2, 6-2 winner over Japan’s Akiko Morigami.
In other quarters, Meghann Shaughnessy beat Cho Yoon-jeong 6-1, 6-2; and Nicole Vaidisova beat Jamea Jackson 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.
Brazil Open
SALVADOR:
Unseeded Alberto Martin of Spain upset seventh-seeded Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina 7-6, 6-4 and advanced to the semi-finals of the $380,000 ATP Brazil Open. Martin will face Australian qualifier Peter Luczak, who beat Argentine Edgardo Massa 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the clay court tournament. In other semi-final, local favourite Ricardo Mello will face sixth-seeded Rafael Nadal of Spain. Mello defeated Spain’s Santiago Ventura 7-5, 6-1, while Nadal beat Agustin Calleri of Argentina 6-2, 6-7, 6-4.
