Sanchez to miss game

LONDON: Alexis Sanchez will miss Arsenal’s first Premier League game of the season after being given an extended break following his exertions with Chile at the Copa America. Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said Sanchez would return to the club at the start of August but would then need time to regain match fitness. Sanchez will miss the Community Shield against league champions Chelsea at Wembley on August 2 as well as the league opener against West Ham United the following week after a gruelling Copa America campaign. He scored the winning penalty for his country in the Copa final against Argentina on July 4 in his 58th game of last season.

Ferreiras score

SAO PAULO: Brazil’s Rivaldo Ferreira and his 20-year old son Rivaldinho have both scored goals for Mogi Mirim in a 3-1 win over Macae in a second division game. The former Barcelona player was involved in all three goals before departing the field after 50 minutes. His pass led to a first headed goal from his son with just three minutes on the clock. He got the second from the penalty spot in the 17th minute before Junior got a third after a one-on-one with the goalkeeper four minutes before half time. Pipico got a consolation goal for the visitors in the 81st minute. Rivaldo, FIFA’s World Player of the Year in 1999, returned to action last week 15 months after he retired from the game and played 70 minutes of his side’s 2-1 win over Nautico.

Shakhtar win opener

KIEV: Shakhtar Donetsk scored two last minute goals to beat Dynamo Kiev, who finished with nine men, 2-0 in the season-opening Ukrainian Super Cup played in Odessa on Tuesday. Shakhtar broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 90th minute after Dynamo goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskyi was sent off for bringing down Alex Teixeira as he burst into the area. Captain Dario Srna calmly sent Alexander Dragovic, who stepped in between the posts, the wrong way with his spot kick. Brazilian winger Bernard then wrapped up the win after a swift counter attack in stoppage time, with Dynamo then having midfielder Serhiy Rybalka sent off after he was shown his second yellow card. Shakhtar’s fourth Super Cup victory provided some consolation for last season when Dynamo celebrated a league and national cup double.

Niekerk runs sub-20

LUCERNE: South African sprinter Wayde van Niekerk joined American great Michael Johnson in elite company while setting a national record in the 200 meters. Van Niekerk clocked 19.94 seconds on Tuesday to become only the fourth runner to have a sub-20 time over 200 meters and a sub-44 in the 400. He ran a career-best 43.96 this month to beat Olympic champion Kirani James of Grenada in Paris. Van Niekerk entered the 200-400 club alongside Johnson, LaShawn Merritt of the United States and Isaac Makwala of Botswana, according to the IAAF. Makwala’s African record of 43.72 set on July 5 retook the continental mark from Van Niekerk set one day earlier.
