Sara, Sujana in last eight

KATHMANDU: Sara Devi Tamang of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) and Sujana Shrestha of Armed Police Force (APF) reached the women’s singles quarter-finals of the sixth Krishna Mohan Memorial Nationwide Open Badminton Championships here today.

Sara defeated Juna Shrestha of Nawalparasi 21-3, 21-1 while Sujana eased past Kabita Joshi of Kanchanpur 21-6, 21-15. Punam Gurung of Kaski sidelined Anita Ghimire of Nepal Police Club (NPC) 21-5, 21-10, Nary Thapa of Banke overcame Sabina Panthi of APF 21-10, 21-16 and Nangsala Devi Tamang of Bhojpur beat Nirmala Giri of Dailekh 21-11, 21-8 to reach last eight. Samjhana Sharma of Banke and Pooja Shrestha of APF also made it to the quarters.

Pooja/Sujana and Tulasi Gurung/Purna Pun advanced to the women’s doubels semi-finals. Pooja/Sujana beat Kabita Karki/Tirna Rai 21-8, 21-12 and Tulasi/Purna overpowered Samina Shrestha/Anju Adhikari 21-2, 21-6. Sara paired with Saraswati Shrestha to knock out Nary and her sister Mary’s pair 21-18, 21-6 while Nangsala/Sakuntala Nembang earned a walkover win.

In the women’s U-16 quarter-finals, Swastika Budhathoki beat Bijaya Rimal 21-12, 21-6, Srinkhala Dahal sidelined Nisha Thapa Magar 21-16, 21-9, Binu Shrestha beat Niru Shrestha 21-18, 18-21, 21-16 and Sikshya Shrestha sneaked past Yalu Bhattarai 21-14, 20-21, 21-13 to reach semis.

Dipesh Dhami, Suman Limbu, Riyajuddin Yiyajdani and Sachin Gurung entered the U-16 boys’ quarter-finals. Dipesh defeated Sagar Limbu 21-7, 21-5, Suman struggled past Rajesh Chand 24-22, 21-13, Riyajuddin beat Sameer Kunwar 21-15, 19-21, 21-11 and Sachin saw off Kripan Gurung 21-18, 21-18. Praveen Basnet, Sammelan Rai, Joseph Adhikari and Irfan Ansari also won their matches.

In the men’s veteran doubles (above 55yrs) Amrit Tajaya/Dharma Lal Pradhan, Tej Bhujel/Bhimsen Gurung, Shailendra Ghale/ Madhav Kumar Thapa and Dil Bahadur Gurung/Laxmi Prasad Gurung reached the semi-finals. Also, Mohan Kumar Rai/Shiva Rai, Surendra Singh/Hemant Rai, Thakur Mohan Shrestha/ Anup Thapa, Ganesh Thapa/Suresh Chandra Shrestha, Chandra Shekhar Lama/Pushpa Raj Tamrakar, Mahesh Shrestha/Gautam Shakya, Pawan Kumar Shrestha/Rajendra Pasad Shakya and Gyan Biram Shah/Pushpa Shrestha reached the men’s Veterans doubles (above 45yrs) quarter-finals.
