Serena out of Fed Cup final
NEW YORK: Serena Williams on Saturday pulled out of the US team to face Italy in the Fed Cup final next weekend, the United States Tennis Association (USTA) announced on its official website.
Williams, who will become the year-end world number one on Monday, was called up this week by US skipper Mary Jo Fernandez for the final against Italy in Reggio Calabria from November 7-8.
"Serena Williams has withdrawn from the U.S. v Italy Fed Cup Final set to take place November 7-8 in Reggio Calabria, Italy. Williams will be replaced by Vania King. King will be making her sixth appearance on the U.S. Fed Cup team," a USTA statement said.
Williams hasn't played Fed Cup since 2007.
The US team will be made up of King, Alexa Glatch, US Open quarter-finalist Melanie Oudin and doubles specialist Liezel Huber.
