Getafe, March 21:

Sevilla eliminated crosstown rival Real Betis from the Copa del Rey on Tuesday, completing a quarter-final second leg which was abandoned last month due to crowd trouble with Sevilla leading 1-0. No goals were scored during the 33 minutes played behind closed doors at Getafe’s stadium, giving Sevilla a 1-0 victory and sending it to the semi-finals.

Play restarted in the 57th minute, the time when Sevilla coach Juande Ramos was knocked unconscious by a bottle thrown from the crowd at Betis’ Manuel Ruiz de Lopera stadium on February 28.

The bottle was thrown moments after Frederic Kanoute had given Sevilla the lead. Betis was punished for the incident, banned from playing its next three matches at its stadium.

Sevilla joined FC Barcelona, Deportivo La Coruna and Getafe in Thursday’s draw for the two-leg semi-finals. The games are scheduled for April 18 and May 9.

Ramos, usually diplomatic in his post-match comments, said Betis had been “really, really, really bad,” and referred to the opponent’s inability to score against Sevilla in two Copa del Rey games and a league match this year. “I’m really surprised by Betis. We were infinitely superior and I think the margin of victory should have been much greater,” Ramos added.

Betis coach Luis Fernandez responded by suggesting the Sevilla coach had “recovered well from last time.” “If he believes that we were trounced, so be it, but I’ve never been fired by a club. That’s not in my curriculum vitae.” Ramos has been sacked by several clubs in the past.

On Tuesday, Sevilla played without Kanoute due to a groin strain but still dominated the brief encounter, forcing Betis goalkeeper Pedro Contreras into a series of saves.

Sevilla’s victory maintained the club’s hope of lifting three trophies this season. It is second in the Spanish league and has also reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup, which it won last season.
