Sherpa takes lead at Carlsberg Classic

Kathmandu, November 17:

Dawa Sherpa netted 37 points on Friday to lead the Carlsberg Classic Golf Tournament 2006 here at the Royal Nepal Golf Club (RNGC) today.

Sherpa topped the leaderboard on countback from Gopal Chitrakar and Major General Om Pun after the opening day of the two-day event, organised by Carlsberg in coordination with the RNGC.

Maj Gopal Gurung returned with 33 points to finish fourth while Purna Shakya at 32 is fifth. Similarly, Rabindra Raj Pandey, Shreejay Acharya, Deepak Rajbhandari, Ang Tsering Sherpa and Maj Gen Kiran Shumsher Thapa are tied at sixth with 29 points.

The eighth edition of the event will have awards in 15 categories with the winner getting an opportunity to represent Nepal in the Malaysian Open ProAm 2007. Similarly, the runner-up will get a round ticket to Pokhara, two-night stay at Hotel Shangri-La Resort in Pokhara and one-day play at Himalayan Golf Course in Pokhara.

In all, 32 golfers including a lady played their 18 holes on the first day while 68 others will complete their rounds on Saturday. The event, being played at stableford 7/8 handicap format, has also drawn three amateurs from Dharan and one from Pokhara.
