Shrestha beats Islam

KATHMANDU: Nepal’s Keshav Shrestha won his sixth round match in the ninth United Insurance and United Leasing Grandmasters Chess Tournament in Dhaka today.

The 2134-rated Shrestha outplayed 2188-rated Polash Aminul Islam of Bangladesh in 42nd move despite he played in pressure at the outset. Shrestha, who now have a total three points, will next take on 2391-rated FIDE Master (FM) Ahmed Minhazuddin of Bangladesh.

Veteran Naveen Tandukar also earned a

point today after receiving

a sixth round bye today. With two draws in previous rounds, Tandukar has

so far earned two points

on the board. Nepal’s only FM Manish Hamal, however, lost to Bangladeshi

FM Mohammad Javed. Hamal has two points so far after the completion of the sixth round. The 2204-rated Javed forced to share a half point by Keshav Shrestha in the fifth round on Monday.

Nepal Champion Badri Lal Nepali also lost his sixth round match against the 2291-rated FM Nasir Sk Ahmed of Bangladesh. Badri Lal, who lost following his own mistake, has only two points on the board so far. In another match, Bilam Lal Shrestha gifted Abdulla Al-Saif of Bangladesh a point with a loss today. Bilam Lal is yet to earn a win in the tournament. He was, however, lucky to have earned a point in the third round where he received a bye.
