Spartak Moscow fined

MOSCOW: The Kontinental Hockey League has fined Spartak Moscow for racist behavior by their fans after bananas were thrown onto the ice at a game. Russian media reported two bananas were thrown from the crowd after Spartak Moscow lost 4-1 on home ice to Croatian club Medvescak Zagreb on Wednesday. The apparent target was Medvescak's Swedish wing Edwin Hedberg, who is black. The KHL says in a statement that Spartak had been fined $9,000, and "seriously warned" about the future conduct of its fans, adding that "breaches linked to the incitement of racial, ethnic, or international discord are unacceptable." Spartak has said that any fans involved in the banana-throwing will be banned from attending games. Police are investigating, but no arrests have been reported.
