Sri Lanka solid after Bairstow's 167 takes England past 400

LONDON: Jonny Bairstow's career-best 167 not out carried England to 416 all out against Sri Lanka in the third and final test on Friday, giving the home team a strong chance of a 3-0 series whitewash.

Sri Lanka, with the series already gone, fought well to reach 62-0 in reply at tea on Day 2 at Lord's.

Bairstow made 150 for the second time in three career test centuries and anchored England with his innings over two days. England teetered at 84-4, when Bairstow arrived, and at 227-6.

Bairstow was part of partnerships of 80 with captain Alastair Cook (85) and 63 with Moeen Ali on Thursday, and combined for a seventh-wicket stand of 144 with Chris Woakes, who made 66, on Friday.
