Tamang moves atop in golf

Kathmandu, December 4

Subash Tamang opened up four-stroke lead over fellow Nepali golfer Niraj Tamang after the second round of the golf tournament under the 13th South Asian Games here at the Gokarna Golf Club today.

Subash Tamang carded six-under 66 to post the 36-hole total of seven-under 137. Niraj Tamang shot three-under 69 to move up to second position with the score of three-under 141. Overnight leader Sukra Bahadur Rai slipped two placed down and shared the third position with Sri Lankan duo MU Chanaka Perera and N Ranga at one-under 71. Rai, who carded four-under 68 in the first round, shot three-over 75, while Perera carded one-under 71 and Ranga returned with even-par 72.

Md Shahabuddin of Bangladesh was next after he carded three-under 69 today for the 36-hole total of one-over 145, while Nepal’s Tanka Bahadur Karki (76), Md Farad (73) of Bangladesh and PS Sisira Kumar (70) of Sri Lanka shared the seventh position at two-over 146. Sri Lanka’s BA Sanjeewa (74) and Bhutan’s Nim Dorji Tamang (71) were tied at six-over 150.

In the team event, Nepal extended the lead to 14 shots after the home side posted 210 in the second round for the total score of 418, while Sri Lanka were second at even-par 432, followed by Bangladesh at two-over 434.

In women’s section, Sri Lanka’s Grace Yatawara extended her lead to 15 strokes after she played a round of four-over 76 on the second day for the total score of one-over 145. Another Sri Lankan golfer Thuhasshini Selvathnam shot second straight eight-over 80 for a total of 16-over 160, while Soniya Akther of Bangladesh was third at 18-over 162 after she shot six-over 78.

Tiniya Minal of Sri Lanka played nine-over 81 for the total score of 22-over 166, while Nepal’s Kashmira Shah (85) and Sri Lanka’s Jakia Sultana (80) shared the fifth position at 24-over 168.
