Timbers 2 defeat EPL side Newcastle United 4-3

PORTLAND: Anthony Manning's header off a free kick from Michael Nanchoff gave Portland the go-ahead goal in the first half and the Timbers 2 held on to defeat Newcastle United 4-3 in an exhibition on Tuesday night.

Rolando Aarons scored two goals in the span of about a minute late in the second half, but Newcastle could not catch up after falling behind 4-1.

The Timbers 2, who are in the midst of the USL season, are the reserve squad of Major League Soccer's Portland Timbers.

The match at Providence Park was the third American exhibition for English Premier League's Magpies under new coach Steve McClaren, former manager of the English national team. Newcastle defeated the Sacramento Republic 1-0 on Saturday.

Georginio Wijnaldum, who joined Newcastle on a five-year contract earlier this month, scored in the sixth minute to give the Magpies the early lead. But Adbul Fatawu Safiu scored the equalizer for Portland some seven minutes later.

After Manning's goal in the 24th minute, Taylor Peay added a goal in the 30th minute on a rebound off a corner kick to make it 3-1.

Nick Besler scored in the 70th minute to up the lead for T2, but Aarons narrowed the gap with his two goals, coming in the 75th and 76th minutes.

T2 is 7-9-2 in the USL this season.
