Kewell sues Lineker

LONDON: Former England soccer captain Gary Lineker was sued for libel on Wednesday by Australian striker Harry Kewell over an article about the player’s transfer from Leeds to Liverpool. The suit, in London’s High Court, stems from a July 2003 Sunday Telegraph article by Lineker headlined “Kewell move made me ashamed of the game.” Kewell, 26, and Lineker, now a BBC television commentator, were both in court for Wednesday’s hearing. — AP

Bowyer faces charge

NEWCASTLE: Newcastle midfielder Lee Bowyer is to face a criminal charge arising out of his on-field fight with teammate Kieron Dyer against Aston Villa, police said on Wednesday. Dyer, however, has avoided prosecution. The two Magpies players — both England internationals — were involved in a flareup during Newcastle’s 3-0 home loss on April 2 and had to be pulled apart by other players. Both were sent off and, while Bowyer wound up with a seven-game ban from the Football Association, Dyer was suspended for three. — AP
