Shrestha finishes first

KATHMANDU: Pratibha Shrestha came first in the 400m individual medley at the Annual Spots Day of Green Peace Academy. While Rajiv Shrestha and Pratima Shrestha won the 100m and 200m race in senior section; Niraj Kunwar and Soni Gurung came first in junior section 100m race. Rubin Barma and Laden Lama won the 200m in junior section. In senior shot put, Shrijana Thakali and Rajiv Shrestha emerged victorious. — HNS

Spain mourn quick exit

MADRID: Funereal moans greeted Davis Cup champion Spain on Sunday after it crashed out in its title defence, losing to underdog Slovakia. Spain lost both singles matches on Friday and then the doubles on Saturday, giving the Slovaks an insurmountable 3-0 lead. Now Spain has to play a qualifying match in September to try to retain a spot in the World Group. — AP

Riri wins in Tokyo

TOKYO: Kenya’s Joseph Riri won the Lake Biwa Marathon in Japan, edging defending champion Jose Rios of Spain by three seconds. while Vanderlei de Lima of Brazil retired with an apparent abdominal problem. Riri finished the 42.195-km race in 2:09:00. Rios finished in 2:09:03 while Japan’s Michitaka Hosokawa clocked 2:09:10 for third. — AP

Ex-England captain dead

Liverpool: Former England cricket captain David Sheppard has died on Saturday, the eve of his 76th birthday, following a long battle with cancer. The former Bishop of Liverpool and Labour peer was one of England’s finest batsmen of the 1950s. He made his Test debut at Lord’s against West Indies in August 1950 and went on to make 21 further Test appearances. Sheppard twice captained his country. — AFP
