Three Star, NRT triumph

LALITPUR: Nabil Three Star Club and New Road Team (NRT) opened the Nepal Bank ‘A’ Division Junior (U-14) Football League with wins here on Monday. Three Star defeated Boys Union Club 3-1 and NRT edged past Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) 3-2. Sajan GC struck twice in the 34th and 64th minute while Aditya Chaudhary also hit the target in the 42nd minute for Three Star. Srijan Thapa scored for Boys Union in the 22nd minute. Ashim Jung Karki scored a brace and Nabin Kansakar struck another for NRT while Sewak Shivakoti converted both the RCT goals. — HNS

Eastern Region win opener

KATHMANDU: Eastern Region Volleyball Club (EVC) and Jawalakhel Volleyball Training Centre (JVTC) won the opening day matches here at the first National Men’s Volleyball League on Monday. The EVC saw off Western Region Volleyball Club 25-17, 25-9, 25-8

while JVTC beat Bal Krishna Volleyball Club 25-21, 25-17, 25-9. The winners earned two points each while the losers also got one point apiece. — HNS

Strauss puts England on top

St John’s: Skipper Andrew Strauss’s 15th Test hundred helped England bury the double misery of their Jamaica humiliation and the abandoned second Test on the opening day of the third Test on Sunday. Strauss hit 169, and there were half-centuries for Owais Shah and Alastair Cook, as England reached 301-3 in their first innings when stumps were drawn at the Antigua Recreation Ground. He put on 123 for the first wicket with Cook before Shah joined him to add 153 for the second wicket before they both departed in the final period of the day.— AFP

Raul breaks Stefano’s record

Madrid: Real Madrid captain Raul scored twice in Real’s 4-0 win over Sporting Gijon to become the club’s all-time leading scorer with 309 goals. Raul, 31, scored twice to overtake Alfredo di Stefano’s long-standing record of 307 as Real marched to an eighth successive league win that helped them close to within 10 points of leaders Barcelona.
