WI humiliate England

Kingston: England crashed to an innings and 23-run defeat against the West Indies in the opening Test on Saturday in the face high-class fast bowling from Jerome Taylor. England, trailing by 74 runs on first innings, collapsed to 51 all out in their second innings. Taylor claimed career-best 5-11, while Benn also collected a career-best 4-31. The drama followed a career-best bowling from Stuart Broad (5-85), as the West Indies were dismissed for 392, replying to England’s first innings total of 318. — AFP

Torres strikes for Reds

London: Fernando Torres kept Liverpool’s dream of a first English league title in 19 years alive with a stoppage-time winner at Portsmouth but Chelsea look dead and buried after yet another stumble. Liverpool twice came from a goal down before Torres, left on the bench until 15 minutes from time, met Yossi Benayoun’s cutback with a bullet header to seal a 3-2 win that lifted the Reds a point clear of Manchester United at the top of the table. Chelsea, though, appear to be out of the reckoning after a goalless draw to Hull left them languishing in the fourth place. — AFP
