Sonam, Sagun win

LALITPUR: Sonam Phunchok and Sagun Thapa won the Under-16 championships of the seventh Jayakar Memorial Junior National Open Tennis Tournament on Saturday. Sonam defeated Gaurav Shah 6-0, 6-4 in final to win the boys’ championship while Sagun beat Pabitra Gurung 6-3, 6-4 to clinch the girls’ title. Likewise, Pranjal Kayastha claimed the U-14 boys’ trophy with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Achal Thapa. Nepal Olympic Committee president Dhruba Bahadur Pradhan gave away prizes to the winners. — HNS

APF clinch trophy

KATHMANDU: Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) School eased to a 4-1 win over Little Angels’ (LA) School to claim the 13th Fr Moran Memorial Inter-school Football Tournament. Prasanna Adhikari, Sushil Raskoti, Manish Karki and Robin Karki scored a goal each for APF while Sanuj Byanjankar pulled back one for LA. Rohan Shahi of St Xavier’s (Jawalakhel) was declared the best goalkeeper, Kunken Lama of LA the best defender, Anil Pariyar of Dolphin the promising playmaker, Manish Karki of APF the best player and Sudan Bhandari of APF the best coach. — HNS

Hernandez to stay

MADRID: Barcelona midfielder Xavi Hernandez, voted the best player at Euro 2008, on Friday signed an extension to his contract that will keep him at the club until 2014. “The new deal means that the Barca midfielder will be staying at the club until at least 30 June 2014, four years more than his original contract which was due to run out in 2010,” the club said in a statement. A product of Barcelona’s youth system, he has spent all of his footballing life at the club since the age of 11. — AFP
