Athletes selected

KATHMANDU: Nepal Amateur Athletics Association (NAAA) on Friday announced the players for the first Asian Youth Athletics Championship and sixth IAAF World Youth Championship. Siddhanta Adhikari and Manisha Adhikari (400m), Sandeep Gurung and Ramita Chaudhary (100m), Yam Sajan Sunar (Long Jump) and Biswo Rupa Budha (1,500m) were selected for the Asian championship to be held in Singapore from July 2-10. Tilak Man Mahato is the lone athlete to represent Nepal in the World Championship slated for July 8-12 in Italy. He will take part in 100m race. The fifth National Games gold medallist Biswo Rupa was picked up directly, while others competed in the selection tournament. — THT Online

Spectrum, ANS win

LALITPUR: Spectrum Advertising and ANS Creation Pvt Ltd entered the final of the second Inter-Ad Agency Football Tournament here on Friday. Spectrum beat Direction Nepal, while ANS defeated Outreach Pvt Ltd by the identical score of 2-0. Prajwol Shrestha scored in the fourth minute and Raj Kumar Shrestha sealed the victory in the 39th of the 40-minute match. Prasanna Baidya opened the scoring for ANS in the fifth minute and Binesh Shrestha struck just before the first half whistle. The final is slated for Saturday. — THT Online

NCC, CCRC in semis

LALITPUR: Nepal Commerce Campus (NCC) defeated Nepal Medical College (NMC) 6-3 to enter the semi-finals of the third LACM Inter-college Football Tournament on Friday. UD Gurung scored a hat-trick, while Niresh Dulal struck twice and Rajendra Deula netted one goal for NCC. Ashim Subedi, Krishna Bogati and Samir Shakya scored one each for NMC. In the other quarter-final, Capital College and Research Centre (CCRC) beat Kathmandu University (KU) 3-1 riding on a hat-trick from Tashi Lama. Dipen Manandhar pulled one back for KU. — THT Online

Man U to visit Asia

MANCHESTER: Manchester United will play in Indonesia for the first time since 1975 as part of the European champion’s offseason tour of Asia. The Red Devils will play an Indonesian Super League XI at Jakarta’s Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on July 20. Also on the tour, Alex Ferguson’s team will play a Malaysia XI on July 18, FC Seoul on July 24 and Zhejiang Lucheng on July 26 in China. — AP

Lega Serie A

ROME: Serie A’s 20 clubs on Thursday voted to break away from their Serie B counterparts and form a new competition along the lines of the English Premier League. The new league, which would no longer involve second-tier clubs in its decision-making process, is to be called Lega Serie A. Only Lecce, who are in the relegation zone and look set to drop to Serie B next season, voted against the motion. The new organisation has picked Maurizio Beretta, a former director of Italian television channel Rai Uno, as its new head. — AP
