National chess tourney

KATHMANDU: Keshav Shrestha, Badri Lal Nepali, Rajendra Shrestha, Surbir Lama, Manish Hamal, Niraj Niraula, Ratna Byanjankar, Megh Raj Shakya, R Bajracharya and Roshan Jaiswal won their respective first round matches here at the Second Madan Memorial National Open Youth Chess Tournament on Wednesday.

The only lady participant Mona Lisa Khumbu, who also represented Nepal at the 15th Asian Games in Doha, also won her first round match against Nobal Ghimire. Earlier, general secretary of the CPN-UML Jhala Nath Khanal inaugurated the tournament. — HNS

Fr Donnelly basketball

KATHMANDU: Two teams of Prime College — A and B — won their opening day matches of the the first Fr Donnelly 3 on 3 Men’s Open Basketball Tournament, organised by Godavari Alumni Association, here on Wednesday. Prime A humiliated Fire ‘n’ Ice 21-0, 21-0 while Prime B saw off Warriors 21-7, 21-0 in the match played in best-of-three rounds. Other winners in the men’s section were Golden Gate, Intensive and South Siders. Winners in the women’s section include Rato Bangala ‘A’, Rato Bangala ‘Junior’, Prime College and Snow Leopard. — HNS

National beach volleyball

KATHMANDU: Nepal Volleyball Association is organising the first Men’s Open National Beach Volleyball Tournament here on July 18-20. Around 25 teams will compete in the tournament played in an artificial surface. Five Development Regions are eligible to field only one team while the tournament is open for the teams inside the Kathmandu Valley, said the organisers here at a press meet on Wednesday.

Top three winners will receive Rs 10,000, Rs 5,000 and Rs 3,000 respectively. The best players will be provided training to prepare themselves for the international events, said the NVA president Ganga Bahadur Thapa. — HNS
