Trinity advance

LALITPUR: Trinity International College beat K and K International College 91-81 to enter the final of the first South Siders Invitational Basketball Tournament here on Thursday. Sharad Robertson of Trinity top scored in the match with 31 points. In the other semi-final match at Nakhipot, Third Eye Re-united players left the venue after the organisers failed to adjust the basket ring for more than an hour. The ring was broken when Darren Wilson of Golden Gate attempted a dunk shot with less than one minute remaining in the third quarter and Golden Gate leading 64-53. The organisers decided to hold the remaining part of the match and the final on Friday. — HNS

England in command

CHESTER-LE-STREET: Essex pair Alastair Cook and Ravi Bopara batted England into a strong position on the first day of the second Test against the West Indies here on Thursday. At tea, England were 184-1, having got through the second session without losing a wicket on a frustratingly placid pitch for pace bowlers. Left-hander Cook was 82 not out and Bopara, whose last two Test innings had both resulted in centuries against the West Indies, 59 not out. Their stand was now worth 115 after they'd come together with the total on 69 following the morning loss of England captain Andrew Strauss (26). — AFP
