Mulmi, Thapa qualify
LALITPUR: Cueists Saroj Mulmi and Niraj Thapa qualified for the second Asian Indoor Games to be held in Macau from October 26 to November 3. Mulmi and Thapa qualified after advancing to the final of the National Snooker Selection Tournament on Monday. Mulmi beat Raju Lama 5-4 and Thapa defeated Buddha Lama 5-2 in semi-finals. The final will be held on Tuesday. — HNS
RIBS, Shrine triumph
KATHMANDU: Anisha Tulachan netted 16 points as Rhododendron International Boarding School (RIBS) beat Prime Sports Club 40-35 at the third Fr Watrin Women’s Open Basketball Tournament on Monday. In another match, Katie Kilcline top-scored with 24 points in Godavari Alumni Association’s 52-56 loss to Shrine Academy. Sangita Shrestha contributed 19 for Shrine. — HNS

KATHMANDU: Bright Future defeated Saptagandaki 25-15, 25-10, 25-11 and Bhim School beat Anal Jyoti 25-13, 25-16, 25-23 in the girls’ semi-final matches at the first Gyankunja Valleywide Inter-school Volleyball Tournament on Monday. Venus ousted Deep Jyoti 27-25, 16-25, 25-18, 25-18 to enter the final in the boys’ section. — HNS
Xavier lift trophy
KATHMANDU: Xavier International College blanked Pinnacle College 4-0 in final to lift the Inter-college Football Tournament on Monday. Kiran Rai, Manish Maharjan, Bholanath Silwal and Chetan Karki scored a goal each. Kiran won the highest goal-scorer’s award while his teammate Sumit Shrestha was declared the best player. In all 22 teams took part in the tournament organised by Budhanilkantha School. — HNS
Powell sets record
RIETI: Asafa Powell bettered his world record in 100 metres by three-hundredths of a second to 9.74 at the Rieti Grand Prix. Powell set the record in the second of two heats.
The record was set with a strong tail wind, but it was below the maximum allowed by the IAAF, making the record valid. In the final, Powell won with no tail wind in 9.78. Michael Frater of Jamaica was second in 10.03, followed by Jaysuma Saidy Ndure of Norway in 10.10. — AP
