C Division selection

KATHMANDU: Man XI Football Club and Jhamsikhel Youth Club entered the Group D quarter-finals of the ‘C’ Division Selection Tournament here at the Sanogaucharan grounds on Friday. Man XI beat Maitri Parivar Youth Club 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw. In the other match, Jhamsikhel edged out Shree Jwala Bhairav Youth Club 2-1. Krishna Bahadur Thapa and Ranjeet Chaudhary found the nets for the winners, while Suman Bista scored for Jwala Bhairav. — HNS

Chhore Patan in final

POKHARA: Chhore Patan HS School and Baba School entered the women’s section final at the Volleyball Festival on Friday. Chhore Patan defeated Tops School and Gyanu Baba outplayed Pun Club in straight sets. In men’s section, Lotus Training Centre and Shangri-La Village made it to the semis. Lotus beat Naya Gaun Yuva Club 27-25, 11-25, 28-18, 20-25, 19-17 and Shangri-La registered a 25-15, 25-21, 25-17 victory over Machhapuchhre Youth Club. Likewise, Fish Tail Academy beat Bhadaure Club in veterans’ section. — HNS

Henry scores winner

DUNDEE: Thierry Henry scored the winner on debut after his penalty kick was saved in FC Barcelona’s 1-0 friendly victory at Dundee United. A minute from the end, the Spanish side was awarded a spot kick when Terrors defender Darren Dods pulled down Giovanni dos Santos. Henry took the penalty but United goalkeeper Grzegorz Szamotulski blocked the shot, only for the Frenchman to hit in the rebound. — AP

India quicks strike

NOTTINGHAM: India left-arm quicks Zaheer Khan and Rudra Pratap Singh took three wickets between them to leave England 94/3 at tea on the first day of the second Test at Trent Bridge on Friday. Khan had figures of 2-40 and Singh 1-32 with key batsmen Michael Vaughan and Kevin Pietersen two of the men out after a wet outfield had prevented play before lunch. But Alastair Cook (35 not out) and Paul Collingwood (25 not out) staunched the flow of wickets with an unbroken stand of 46 after England had sunk to 47/3. — AFP
