Flintoff captain again

HOBART: Andrew Flintoff has been reappointed England captain after Michael Vaughan suffered a torn hamstring that is set to sideline him for at least a week. Flintoff has looked a better player since Vaughan took over, culminating in his man-of-the-match performance in the drought-breaking win against New Zealand on Tuesday. Lancashire batsman Mal Loye was called into the England squad, although Vaughan is travelling to Brisbane with them. — AFP

COLOMBO: Sri Lankan decided on Wednesday to rest Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas for the upcoming four-match one-day series in India. Left-arm paceman Nuwan Zoysa and Nuwan Kulasekera, a right-arm medium pacer, were recalled to support leg spinners Malinga Bandara and Upul Chandana. The first one-dayer will be played on February 8 in Pune, followed by Rajkot on February 11, Goa on Febrary 14 and Visakhapatnam on Februry 17. — AFP

Khan released on bail

KARACHI: Former Pakistan captain Moin Khan was freed on bail after a brief detention over a complaint that he beat up his wife at home. Moin was arrested early Tuesday after his wife, Tasneem Khan, complained, and was released in the evening after submitting a surety bond. Khan was quoted as saying that he committed the act “in extreme anger”. — AFP
