Gyanodaya win

LALITPUR: Hosts Gyanodaya Bal Batika defeated Prime College 58-40 in the final of the Valleywide Inter-Higher Secondary School Basketball Tournament under Gyan Carnival here on Friday. Kalyan Tulachan top-scored for the hosts with 21 points, and Binod Maharjan netted 12 points. For Prime, Bikram Joshi netted 20 and Rajiv Joshi added 13 points. Tulachan was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Indira Yakthumba, founder principal of Gyanodaya College, gave away prizes to the winners. The schol-level tournament will be held from December 6. — HNS

14 golds for Nepal

Kathmandu: Nepal Kubudo and Martial Arts Club won 14 gold, six silver and seven bronze medals at the first Asian WUKO Continental Open Karate Championship held in Vishakhapatnam of India from November 23-26. Kabita Shahi won three golds, while Pragyan Dahal, Vivek Regmi and Pratima Rajak bagged two each. Riwaj Shrestha, Priya Shrestha, Suraj Subedi, Surya Bahadur Bhetwal and Surendra KC won one gold medal apiece. Riwaj Shrestha, Jeevan Prasai, Bibas Ghimire, Sabin Rana, Pratima Rajak and Ajay Magar won silver medals. Surya Bahadur Bhetwal and Ram Mani Kafle won two bronze medals each while Sabin Rana, Sajan Magaiya and Ajay Magar got one each, said the club. Nepali referee Om Krishna Prasai earned a WUKO International Referee licence, while Surendra KC, Ajay Magar and Surya Bahadur Bhetwal got WUKO Referee Diploma from the referee seminar. India won the championship with 18 gold medals, ahead of Nepal and Portugal. — HNS

Police arrest two

MADRID: Spanish police arrested two men for making death threats against Aletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo. Police said on Friday the unnamed men — both aged 35 and from Madrid — were arrested after being identified by closed circuit television from Cerezo’s residence. The surveillance showed the pair spraying “Cerezo You Are Going To Die,” and “Cerezo Dead.” — AP

Pakistan axe Afridi

KARACHI: Pakistan left out explosive all-rounder Shahid Afridi from the 14-man squad for the first one-day international against the West Indies, Pakistan Cricket Board said. The first in the five-match series will be played in Rawalpindi on December 5, followed by the second at Faisalabad (Dec 7), third in Lahore (Dec 10), fourth at Multan (Dec 13) and the final game in Karachi (Dec 16). Younis Khan will lead the team in Rawalpindi as captain Inzamam-ul-Haq will be completing a four-match ban. — AFP
