Umrigar dies at 80

MUMBAI: Polly Umrigar, a former India cricket captain and the first Indian to hit a double century, died after a protracted battle with cancer, his daughter Shireen said on Wednesday. He was 80. Umrigar passed away on Tuesday night at his home in Mumbai. Umrigar notched up a string of records during his 15-year Test career, beginning 1948. He played 59 Tests with a highest score of 223 against New Zealand in 1955. — AP

Akhtar files appeal

Lahore: Fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar on Wednesday filed an appeal to the Pakistan Cricket Board against his two-year ban for a positive doping test. A PCB tribunal last week banned paceman Akhtar for two years, and Mohammad Asif for one year, from playing domestic and international cricket after both tested positive to the banned steroid Nandrolone. — AP
